Builders - Alien
This is Alien by the Builders from their 1982 Beatin Hearts album Alien also features Chris Knox (organ, backing vocals) and Mike Dooley (drums) both ex-Toy Love. The Builders were primarily driven by Bill Direen, who also wrote poetry and performed theatre in Christchurch during the 80's and 90's. He's actually still at it since I see some of his recent songs here on RUclips.
As you can tell, I borrowed a nature video about bugs, and added the Alien track, nothing too fancy...
And yes, that is a 1ft long giant centipede catching and eating a bat!!!

Spines - Lily and I
Просмотров 6 тыс.15 лет назад
Spines (not The Spines) were from Wellington and were Jon McLeary, Ross Burge, Wendy Calder, & Neil Duncan. They released 2 albums and an EP that I know of (only one album, Idiot Sun, was on Flying Nun, the rest were on Jayrem, which is probably why they are not well known). As with a lot of NZ music at the time, they had a unique sound, with sax and bagpipes, amongst other things. This song (w...

This is part 2, which finishes off the Auckland scene, which ends on a more interesting note, then moves straight to Wellington, which features the Pelicans
NorthScene - Part 1 Auckland

This is an old documentary that I thought was a bit embarrassing to upload - it doesn't really show the Auckland scene in a very good light. Then I noticed a very young looking Russell Crow appears in a few shots. It also features the Able Tasmans, and another band i recognize, but can't remember the name - Car Crash Set... Thanks to Tash and Mike for the video.
The Orange - Fly
Просмотров 3,5 тыс.15 лет назад
The Orange were (I think) Andrew Brough's first band - certainly the first that made a record. This song is off their 1985 EP 'Fruit Salad Lives'. One song off that EP 'What's in a Name' made it on to the Flying Nun boxset. Andrew doesn't seem to have made any more music since the Bike album, which a shame for all of us
Five Year Mission - UFO
Просмотров 2 тыс.15 лет назад
Five Year Mission were from Napier. I don't think they were very well known in much of New Zealand. They released a few singles, and no albums as far as I know. This track was from their 4 track EP (which only had 2 tracks, due to losing the mastertape), released in 1985 thru Positive Youth Records .The song is about UFO's which were seen off the off the coast of Kaikoura in 1978, and were know...

This is another song from the Live at Sammy's show in Dunedin from 1989. I always liked At the Bottom, from the first Oddities tape, not sure if it was on any other album or CD...

christchurch rock scene part1

Another old documentary about the early 1980's rock scene in Christchurch - includes (I'm guessing here), an early interview with The Llama (first version of the Bats??), and Dick Driver being silly...
Split Enz Documentary - First 10 Years

An old documentary about the first 10 years of Split Enz - its a bit strange, but so were Split Enz back then. Thanks to Mike and Tash for getting this for me
Alpaca Brothers - Gnarled Tree Live
Просмотров 3 тыс.16 лет назад
Bugger it, I'm doing another montage for this song, since you'll never hear it otherwise... For those of you who missed them live, the Alpaca brothers were full-on - I don't believe their Legless EP does them justice. This is off an Every Secret Thing tape(put out by Robert Scott), which I have now lost. The original sound was lousy, and I improved it slightly by recording though my speakers wi...

Jean Paul Satre Experience were from Christchurch and put out a few albums, but I always liked their earlier stuff like "I Like Rain" and this song... Note - this is from official Flying Nun DVD - buy a copy from www.smokecds.com/cd/36458

If this came out now people would go crazy for it
Thanks for posting. They played in Berkley California 1986 and invited anyone at the club to play cricket the next day nearby. What a great crew! Big regret for me. I couldn't go and I don't remember why, but I'll always remember missing out.
Love this song! I first heard it on The Trip 4 which I bought on CD in '94. Just got back into listening to all my old CDs from the 80-90's but would love to find a copy of Vortura. Pretty hard to find these days.
Whenever I listen to this song I think I’m the coolest person in the world.
Because we are
How nasty!!! I'm loving it!!! today 2024!! Kid of 1968 - back end - 60's - 70's - appreciate all that music and prior Appreciate Aussie Music! All the Oz Bands!!! Top ten fade out ...
Thanks a lot!!!!!!
Used to watch these guys LUC at the DuxdeLux way back then, along with a few other great Christchurch bands of the time.
This band was awesome! So sad they weren’t around very long. Still a great song!!💙
I remember seeing Bailter Space live at Arc Cafe in Dunedin NZ in the late 90’s. That gig has always stayed with me for how incredibly powerful it was, and how much it formed my musical landscape in the decades that followed.
JPSE , great band , love the vocals 🎉
When I bought this (for the album with Talking To Stranger) around 1984 - I had no idea this song was on it as a 12" 45rpm - I'd heard "Run Run Run" played at the end of the night at a certain nightclub and loved it then... Sounds so much better on vinyl... a 9 minute song in 1983? WTF? Is this prog? This song pre-dates the epic "How Soon Is Now" by a couple years - did Messrs Morrissey and Marr hear this before they made their epic? I still think this song is better (but I love How Soon Is Now)...
What a spectacular find! Mint

What a fucking song.
Love yiz
It's really hard to judge objectively, but i feel like Skeptics sounds as good now as it did then. If it were recorded today it would probably have a little more bottom end.
Still a stunning video....truly sublime lyrics...the music is ptetty good too💋💋
The Hot sprockets, could I have done a great cover of this 👍👍👍👍👍
Fly agaric?
To my surprise, I found this on an old American Bandstand, yet did this band ever appear on Top of the Pops?
Loudest band I ever heard
Hard to believe he's been gone for 22 years.
Their finest moment without a doubt.
Sweet Jesus! That Petrol Emotion! I remember driving to get some smuck with this very song playing on the cassette player as loud as fuck! Good times, the 80's -well, at least I'm here to tell the story today...-
Didnt a metal band cover this at some point?
god I hate 2020s so much
We all do.
@ ▷ Bailter Space 🎶▷ X 💿▷ Vortura 📅▷ 1994 🎬︎▷ Phil Harder
alistair got a bit of a kramer thing going on here
Does anyone have the lyrics? Were there ever even lyrics included in the CD, Cassette, or Vinyl releases?
Nope, no lyrics were ever in any Bailterspace release.
supprted gillan at the coogie bay....awesum show
This is New Zealand music at its finest. Fiona has to be one of, if not the most underrated female NZ singers.
Love this sound
Wat a great song!!!! I miss the wheel!!! Shitty bands for the last 20 years!!!
TE AMO BEBÉ 💖
TE AMO MUCHO ARES
I believe Andrew Brough end up making a career out of making background music for aussie TV shows after Bike
Maraetai and Duders. Chur!!
We're seriously loud but clear also live seen them few times early 90s I nz your ribs were rattling fantastic
Pure genius, sounds newer and more interesting as time goes by...
Absolutely brilliant - my favorite 💗
Reminds me a bit like something The Fall would do
A friend that owns a used record shop played a TPE album.. My reaction was!! Bloody hell that's a blast from the past, haven't heard from them in decades. Thus why I'm here now :)
,..............with The Netherworld Dancing Toys?
I believe they *did* briefly advertise for new members, but this was during the difficult period around 76/77 following not only Phil Judd's departure but also the rhythm section
I was there 😊😢 im so old now..but oh so cool😅❤❤
was never a looker but sang better then the rest.
Hey what are the lyrics to this?
A video doesnt make the music better.
Can I just say how fresh this song is. I keep playing it, sharing it, and listening to it. Reminds me of THE PIXIES, HUSKERDU, and SUGAR. It’s really difficult to produce SHOE GAZE that doesn’t sound like a copy. They did it. This is totally original. I do hear the influences. But that aside, it’s a nice piece of art that said.”
❤pp❤❤😅😊
